Bachata is one of the most popular Latin rhythms in the world, and dancing outdoors in Málaga is a truly unique experience. If you are an absolute beginner, it's normal to feel a bit nervous before your first class. But don't worry: everyone starts from zero.
In this guide, we'll teach you the basic fundamentals you need to know to take your first bachata steps with confidence and enjoy the music.
The Basic Bachata Rhythm
Bachata is danced to an 8-beat count (or two bars of 4 beats). The basic movement consists of three side steps and a tap with the toe on the fourth beat, accentuating the hip. Then we repeat in the opposite direction:
1. Beat 1: Step with your left foot to the left.
2. Beat 2: Bring your right foot together with the left.
3. Beat 3: Another step with the left foot to the left.
4. Beat 4: Tap your right toe next to the left foot (with a subtle hip lift).
5. Beats 5-8: Repeat the same pattern to the right starting with your right foot.
Do you need a dance partner?
One of the most common questions from beginners is whether they need to come with a partner. The short answer is: No! In our Bachata Amigos classes, we rotate partners constantly. This not only helps you learn to adapt to different dancing partners, but it's also the best way to meet new people and make friends in Málaga.
What to bring to your first outdoor class
Since we dance outdoors near the sea (close to the Steam Engine Sculpture in Málaga), we recommend wearing comfortable and light clothing. Comfortable sneakers or flat shoes that don't have too much grip are ideal for turning and moving easily. And don't forget to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated!
